In December 2008, a foot of snow fell on the city of Seattle. In my seven years as a Seattle-lite, I’ve not seen snow lay on the ground for more than about 10 minutes because it almost never gets below freezing here.

Needless to say, the city wasn’t prepared. They don’t plow or salt or sand. By day two of the storm, main roads were being used for skating, sleding, and skiing, but not driving. Neighborhood roads were impassible without chains or four wheel drive. Our cars had neither, so we backpacked to the grocery store. Driving was just too dangerous.

Since we were snowed in, it was fun to see how our cat, George, would handle things. It was his first major snow storm. At first he avoided the cold and ice. Later, as cabin fever set in, he began to embrace it. The link below is a sequence of pictures following George as he forges bravely through unfamiliar snow covered territority. I have to admit I was impressed with his determined attempt to move through the snow because he’s usually such a pussy.
